A-to-B routes

Offroad routing - start, finish, via points, vehicle profile and offroad slider. Coming soon to the Studio.

Coming soon to the Studio. Route calculation already works on the server; the page in the Studio, with the map for placing points and the slider, is on its way. This chapter describes what the engine does.

From a start, a finish and any via points, RoadBookAI calculates one or more routes on the roads and tracks of the map, with a vehicle profile and a "how much offroad" slider. The chosen route becomes a GPX and, on request, a complete roadbook made with the same engine as always.

Profiles

ProfileFor whomSurface
Enduroenduro bikesall tracks; default offroad 0.7
Adventureadventure bikeshard tracks and very poor surfaces avoided; default offroad 0.3
SSVcars or 4x4 SSVshard tracks allowed but discouraged; default offroad 0.6

The offroad slider

It goes from 0 (prefers asphalt) to 1 (looks for as much dirt as possible). For example, in the Valle Varaita, from Saluzzo to Sampeyre on an enduro, the share of dirt road goes from 0 % with the slider at 0 to 13 % at 0.5 and 52 % at 0.8.

The route never exceeds twice the km of the fastest route: if it would need more, the slider is lowered and the summary says so.

Other choices

  • Via points, in order (up to 25).
  • Alternatives: from 1 to 5; those that are too similar (more than 60 % of the km in common) are discarded.
  • Motorways and expressways: avoided by default for enduro and SSV; they can be allowed or excluded.

What you get

For each alternative:

  • the GPX with altitude;
  • a summary: total km, km of asphalt, dirt road, track and unverified, km by road type, elevation gain and loss, estimated time, any prohibited sections;
  • a map with each section coloured by surface;
  • on request, the complete roadbook (JSON, RN2, OpenRally, PDF) generated from the route.

Restrictions

The route never uses roads that the map closes to motor vehicles or to the chosen vehicle (for example no motorcycles, private, agricultural or forestry access): RoadBookAI rechecks every road used and, if it finds a restriction, excludes it and recalculates. Footpaths and mule tracks are always excluded.

Local orders, closures and regional laws are not on the map: the route is confirmed on a recce.

Regions

The calculation works on regions prepared in advance on the server from a regional extract of the map (for example north-west Italy or Morocco). If a point falls outside the prepared region, a message tells you which point and why.
